Project Pea: Downsizing our Lives

A peek into the process of downsizing our lives to fit into a 44’ sailboat. The founders of Salty Ventures made the bold decision to quit their jobs and sold everything they could to embark on the journey of a lifetime; life on the water.

Jared’s first yard sale

Jared dove into downsizing with a smile, embarking on his first-ever yard sale. From determining what to get rid of and pricing items to moving everything to the front yard from the second floor and putting up signs around the neighborhood, the fatigue was real but he took it in stride and was the star of the yard sale show.

who knew we had so much “stuff”

We consider ourselves minimal, yet somehow we accumulated so much “stuff” in our two-bedroom apartment. Certainly it wasn’t all necessary for our life of adventure ahead. The yard sale served as a great couple of days hanging with neighbors who we’d befriended during our time in Long Beach while getting some cash to help fund our move. We hope all our items are now in homes being used and loved by someone else. Everything not purchased was donated to local charities.

one step further in the process

It was surreal seeing everything we deemed “necessity” in one pile ready to load into our cars. Practicality trumped sentimentality, a hard line to walk when making decisions about what made the cut. Hard to imagine how all these items would fit into our two cars, much less the limited storage of a 44’ monohull sailboat.

all the feels of an empty apartment

Seeing our empty apartment came with all the feels. Gratitude and love for all the memories made during our time there and the people we collected as friends along the way. Excitement and fear of the unknown thinking about our next step in the journey. We took an exhausted moment to feel proud of all the work it had taken to get this far and grieved all we were giving up and would miss. Locked up, handed over the keys, and stuffed ourselves into our packed cars to embark on the long journey ahead.
